Here is a list books that I’ve found extremely helpful in terms of re-focusing my mindset and my marketing.

1. Escape from Cubicle Nation: From Corporate Prisoner to Thriving Entrepreneur by Pamela Slim
The best book that an aspiring entrepreneur can read about planning their break from their 9-5. Pamela doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of becoming an entrepreneur. However she provides readers with the foundation for creating a do-able plan of action. The book covers an array of topics including financial planning and how to tell your partner that you’re quitting your day job.
2. The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz and Increase Revenue by Shama Hyder Kabani.
Social media still baffles most business people. Most businesses owners know that they need a website and that’s about it. Shama provides clear and easy to understand advice about effective ways to drive traffic to your website. She also gives readers the how’s and why’s of using Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIN.
3. The Secrets of Six Figure Women: Surprising Strategies To Up Your Earnings and Change Your Life by Barbara Stanny
Though not technically a business book, or even one for entrepreneurs, it’s a must read for most women. Generally women “underearn,” meaning that their decisions result in them earning far less than they are capable of given their experience and/or education. Barbara identifies the traits and belief of underearners and then provides clear strategies to overcome them.
4. Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t by Jim Collins
This book is a rarity, a thoroughly research book that’s also engaging. In nutshell this book debunks the conventional wisdom about how leadership and technology impacts the success of companies (meaning that you don’t have be charismatic or use state of the art equipment) to develop a great company. Learning about the “Hedgehop Concept” (Simplicity within the Three Circles) is critical to developing a business that reflects what you’re the best at, not just competent in.
5. The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join the New Rich by Timothy Ferris
Before you roll your eyes, let me say this…. Tim Ferris is a single guy and some of his recommendations don’t easily translate to women who have children. Also some folks will have a problem with his idea of outsourcing to low wage, Asian countries. HOWEVER, the value of Tim’s book is that gives solo business owners a different way to view how they handle their operations. If you’re business is dependent on you being available 24-7, this book will give you ideas about how to create more freedom without sacrificing income.
6. Coaching Millions: Help More People Make More Money, Live Your Ultimate Lifestyle by Milana Leshinsky
Milana provides a eye-opener for coaches, particularly those struggling with a 1 on 1 coaching model. Milana, a successful entrepreneur, wife and mother outlines a variety of practical and easy to develop business structures that will allow coaches to service more clients and generate more income by leveraging their time. Why listen to her?…she’s built a $500,000 a year business working 4 hours a day.
7. The Copywriter’s Handbook: A Step-By-Step Guid to Writing Copy That Sells by Robert W. Bly
I warn you that some of the writing comes off as old school marketing. However, if you concentrate on the underlying message you will gain solid advice about how to best communicate your message to your prospects and sell more of your programs, products or services.
8. The War of Art: Break Through The Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles By Steven Pressfield
First let me tell you that my copy is is full of sticky notes and underlining. According to Pressfield the enemy of creativity is Resistance. Resistence shows up in many forms, which are detailed in deceptively short passages. Resistance, more than raw talent, is what ultimately prevents you from giving your gifts to your clients and the world at large.
Bonus Book:
The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Your Life To the Next Level by Gay Hendricks
This book is important to realizing understanding why most fail to reach their full potential. The central principle that Gay discusses is the “Upper Limit Problem.” It is the ceiling that we place on our lives. It’s the place where self-sabotage begins. Once you’ve hit our comfort zone for happiness, you invariably become fearful, thus justifying a halt in your progress (or worse steps backward).
